Dress for 401 Clothing: Embroidery

As mentioned in my last post I have had the lovely opportunity to create pieces for a collab collection with the brand 401 Clothing for the FashionweekTo runway. It all started with the creation of this dress in particular. The embroidery was all done by me with my simple sewing machine on top of thin black chiffon using gold thread. I used up about 5 rolls of the gold thread in the end for the amount of embroidery I did. The dress itself ended up coming together in about two days, but weeks were spent on the embroidery. I used images provided by Shehab for the various parts of the embroidery, all Egyptian motifs, using light see through chiffon with a clear stabilizer that dissolves with water. It was my first time using a stabilizer like that so I was skeptical but in the end it worked, I used a bright yellow marker to draw to the design on the clear stabilizer and attached the stabilizer to the chiffon before embroidery. Here are some snippets of the dress and process of how the dress came to being. Enjoy!

  1. […] This little black dress I created when I finally started to get back to sewing for myself. I did not know what to make but I knew I had to use the sparkle fabric I found in one of the fabric shops on Queen Street in Toronto. It was the most expensive fabric I spent my money on, I cannot remember exactly how much it was but I recall it was over $100/meter. I later used the rest of this sparkle fabric for the 401 clothing fashionweekTO show I did for one of the dancer costumes, you can read about the show here and here. […]
